Copy editors are different from editors. The copy editor is hired to proof the manuscript and they can sometimes, like the one here, make mistakes and/or think they know better than the author. They do not have final say.
That would drive me right around the bend.
It did make for funny anecdotes....well after the fact of course.

Been there, done that. My good friend the novelist Sharyn McCrumb once had two rubber stamps made. The first said: "STET"
And the second read: "STET, DAMMIT!"
