Your post is probably one of the best descriptions of how to go about promoting a book in any genre--the careful research, the numerous targets/addressees, the willingness to get a lot of nos before getting some yeses, and the "luck" of being in the right place at the right time for a boost to the next opportunity. Thanks! I worked really hard to make that book a success and it earned me terrific speaker's fees and gave me so many wonderful experiences. But if I hadn't put myself and the book out there, I wouldn't have expanded my range so dramatically. In NYC in the eighties I worked with a group of writers around a Reading Series at the New School,Conversations With Writers where the facilltators would pair younger and older writers, cross generational and usually around a theme. I had made friends with the brilliant and sunny Toni Cade Bambara whose remarkable The Black Woman broke the same new grounds opened up by such writers as Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Wesley Brown,JohnA.Williams and others. When Toni came to read, she often brought her companion,a ten to fifteen foot graygreen dufffel bag,claiming,
I brought all these goodies four you, shlepping them here. And I dont want to take any back withme So come on up and sign up for a wise newtime.
