Sunday's Swedish Scam
This scam below just popped up in my Inbox and it’s a change of pace because it isn’t about somehow getting one of my books more publicity. It’s a whole new genre, but the sender hasn’t even tried to make it remotely personal or convincing:
“Hi, My name is Sofia from Sweden. I understand that this medium might not be a traditional starting point for friendships, yet I believe that it may provide us both with the opportunity for a unique, profound connection.
At this point in my life, I am eager to develop a new relationship that is enriched with valuable intellectual exchanges, common interests, mutual respect, and shared experiences. If this idea interests you, I would absolutely love to engage in a dialogue and get to know you better.
Thank you for taking the time to read my email. I am looking forward to your reply and the potential of our burgeoning friendship.
Warm Regards,
Sofia”
I extensively studied Sweden and Swedish when it looked like I’d be co-teaching a study abroad program at Lund University. Yet even after months of email, I found my contacts there deeply reserved. My Swedish is rusty now, but I think this says it well: Det är skitsnack. It’s utter bullshit.

I get a good number of similar emails from "authors" wanting to connect. My favorite was the one from Robert B. Parker.
Ugh.
