That’s been a common question when I’m on a book tour, and if I’m in an antic mood, I might sometimes say “Walmart.” But my serious answer isn’t so much that I get ideas as that I get inspiration—and that’s often from other writers I admire and re-read.
I don’t think he’s as good a writer as Cruz Smith who seems to capture Russian paradoxes and irony so well. Kaminsky seems to have gone for a more pulp-y style with his Russian books than Cruz and it lacks subtlety--at least via audiobook.
It would be interesting to compare Smith's Renko novels with Stuart Kaminsky's Rostinkov novels- two Americans writing about Russian cops.

Bill DeAndrea explained that he subscribed to a magazine for ideas, probably sending away some members of the audience to search for it.
I love it! Though I guess now people would expect the answer to be AI...... :-(
Inspired by Walmart? Bravo. Not many would admit that. Elites, who control publishing, hate Walmart, for some reason
It was a joke.
